New Delhi: Police on Sunday said a surfer has lost his life after a 3-metre long shark attacked him at a popular beach of Australia's east coast.
On Sunday, when the shark mauled off the surfer's leg, the man was surfing at Kingscliff, about 100 kilometres south of Brisbane.
Police, in a statement, said, "Police have been told several board-riders came to his assistance and fought the shark off before the injured man could be helped to shore," police said in a statement.
Police added, "He was rendered first aid for serious injuries to his left leg but died at the scene."
Police said the man had not yet been formally recognised but was assumed to be a 60-year-old from Queensland state.
This fatal attack of the shark is the third known such attack under this year.
As per the data from Sydney's Taronga Zoo, there were 27 attacks but no deaths off Australia last year.
