The Festival Of New Beginning Makar Sankranti

New Delhi: Today is the festival of new beginning "Makar Sankranti". This festival is dedicated to, Hindu Sun God, Surya. Makar Sankranti celebrates on 14 january. In some states, this festival celebrates on 15th January. This festival also known as Magha Mela, Maghi, & Bhogi. This festival is regarded as important for spiritual practices and accordingly people take a holy dip in rivers, especially Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri.

The playful nature of festival allows everyone to fly kites during day time. The festival had many religious beliefs. Preparation of sweets & performing the Makar Sanskrati puja vidhi , rituals are common customs of this festival. It is the festival of harvesting.

This festival is celebrated in different way across the country. In Tamil Nadu , it is called Pongal & celebrated for four days. In Maharashtra, Ladoo made of sesame & jaggery is prepared & disturbed among friends & relatives. In Punjab, Kheer is made of rice & sugar is prepared & people dance around bonfires. In Assam this festival is known as Bihu. Many people also celebrates this day by taking dip in Holy Water.
