Srinagar:  It was a visit to a girlfriend that allowed security forces to kill Kashmir terrorist Umer Khalid today, said sources. Khalid, a senior commander of the Jaish-e-Mohammed, was shot in Ladoora in North Kashmir; security forces first identified him and asked him to surrender; when he fired on them along with other terrorists, more troops were rushed in.

Khalid was injured and managed to escape briefly before he was cordoned off and shot.

A woman who he was romantically involved with told the police that he was likely to visit her this morning. She angrily referred to him as "Jahannum" (Hell). They were not in an exclusive relationship.

"He had about 17 girlfriends - some new, some old. A few who he had ditched became vengeful and even started giving information about his whereabouts to us," revealed a senior police officer who was involved in this morning's encounter.

Intelligence officials and the police believe that Khalid helped prepare and execute last week's attack on a huge base of the Border Security Force beside the Srinagar airport.

Security agencies say that many terrorists like Khalid who come from across the border in Pakistan fall for better-educated Kashmiri women and manage to intimidate or coerce some of them into relationships. Sources said the affairs are fecund material for detailed information that can be used to track down wanted terrorists, some of whom are told on by wives or girlfriends who have been ditched.

"When they go to meet women, they go alone and we launch an operation then only," revealed a senior official.

In August, another terrorist, Abu Dujana of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, was killed when he was visiting a young woman. In that case too, his jilted lover had informed the police about his coordinates.

Jodhpur:  A 17-year-old who had carved a "Blue Whale" into her arm was rescued after she jumped off a cliff into a lake in Rajasthan's Jodhpur around midnight yesterday.

The girl, spotted circling around the lake on her scooter for some time, was saved by divers and policemen and handed over to her parents.

The teen, the daughter of a Border Security Force (BSF) soldier, had left home on Monday night claiming she was going to the market.

When she did not return, her parents called her on her mobile phone. They realized she had left it lying somewhere when it was picked up by a stranger.

The family panicked and started looking for the missing girl, who, in the meantime, had been spotted riding her scooter around the lake.

The police, alerted by some people, reached the spot just as the girl was jumping off a hilltop. They called her, but she ran and plunged into the waters as they watched.

Police officer Lekhraj Sihag said he and a diver, Om Prakash, pulled the girl out of the lake. When they questioned her, she reportedly said she had to "finish a task". The familiar "blue whale" shape carved into her arm with a knife also offered a big clue.

"We got information at around 11 pm last night that a girl was driving around Kalyana lake...we reached the spot and called out to her but she ran up towards the hillocks surrounding the lake, then she jumped into the lake and we pulled her out in time," Mr Sihag told us.

Several states are struggling with cases suspected to be linked to the deadly online challenge that originated in Russia; some 100 deaths across the world have been linked to it.

The game draws in people, mostly children and teenagers, through online chat rooms. The administrator sniffs out vulnerable candidates and switches to a private chat mode where the player has to take up 50 macabre dares. These include cutting and isolating oneself, listening to disturbing songs, spending time in graveyards, watching horror movies and finally, jumping off a building. For the last dare, the player is given a choice - kill yourself or watch someone close die.

Self-styled godman and rape convict Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh will be sentenced this afternoon at a jail in Haryana's Rohtak, which has been turned into a fortress with multi-layered security and the police have warned that they may shoot at any sign of trouble. The judge, who on Friday found the chief of the Dera Sacha Sauda sect guilty of raping two women followers 15 years ago, will fly in a helicopter to Rohtak today to sentence Ram Rahim; the order is expected after 2.30 pm.
Over a lakh of the Dera chief's followers had gathered in Panchkula, where Judge Jagdeep Singh had given Friday's verdict, and they ran riot after Ram Rahim was convicted, burning vehicles and clashing with the police in deadly violence that left 38 people dead and over 250 injured.

In Rohtak today, top officers have said anyone who tries to cause trouble could be shot. About 10 Dera campuses all over Rohtak district have been searched and sealed and around 100 people are in preventive custody as the police try to ensure that Ram Rahim's followers have no opportunity to gather in big numbers, senior police officer Navdeep Singh Virk told NDTV.

"If the situation so arises that I need to use firearms... my officers are briefed that if needed they shall use whatever force required to counter the situation," Mr Virk said, adding that there are multiple layers of security in Rohtak city and around the Sunaria  jail, about 10 kilometres away, where Ram Rahim is lodged in a special cell.
"There is access control around the jail," said Mr Virk. The Border Security Force (BSF) has set up bunkers right outside the prison. Twenty-eight paramilitary companies, with about 2,400 personnel, have been deployed and 18 columns or about 1,800 soldiers of the Army are on standby.

Rohtak Deputy Commissioner Atul Kumar said, "We will not allow anyone to create any sort of trouble in Rohtak. Anyone breaking law or indulging in acts of violence or arson will himself be responsible for his fate. Anyone creating trouble will be given a warning first and if he still pays no heed, then he will have to face the bullet."
"People do not have any reason to be afraid as stringent security measures have been taken," Mr Kumar said, adding that the situation in Rohtak is "completely under control" and the police are fully prepared to tackle any situation.

The officer asked people not to visit the district if they do not have urgent work. People entering the district are being asked to show proof of identity and the reason for visit. If they are unable to explain why they are coming into Rohtak, they will be arrested, he said.

All entry points into the city are being closely monitored and the National Highway 10 has been cordoned off for about 10 kilometres.

Schools and colleges are closed today in Rohtak, but while large gatherings are banned, there is no curfew.

NEW DELHI:  After a photo captioned in a Home Ministry report as "floodlighting along the border" turned out to be from the Spain-Morocco border, Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi has demanded an explanation from officials and said: "If it's a mistake by the ministry, we will apologise."

The Home Secretary has reportedly also asked the Border Security Force to explain where it got the picture. Sources say officers are scrambling for answers, especially since the gaffe was embarrassingly easy to detect.

The image of the dazzling yellow strip was taken in 2006 by Spanish photographer Javier Moyano, says a report in altnews.in. The photograph, according to the report, shows the Spanish conclaves on the north coast of Africa that have a fenced and floodlit border with Morocco.

The photo was reportedly picked up by a few other sites who carried it with reports on border security and floodlighting.

The government has said that 647 km of India's border with Pakistan and Bangladesh has been floodlit to prevent terrorists and immigrants from infiltrating into Indian territory. It was widely reported that the floodlighting was completed in a year.

Another report also said the government has decided to replace the floodlights with LEDs in the coming years.

Almost 2,000 km of the border in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan and Gujarat is floodlit.
