Shakib Akl Hasan Bangladesh Cricketer Apologises After Receiving Threats For Attending Hindu Ceremony
New Delhi: Star Bangladesh cricketer Shakib Al Hasan has been forced to make a public apology after receiving an Islamist threat for attending a Hindu ceremony in India. The all-rounder is the largest target of the increasingly vocal Islamists who have also staged huge anti-France rallies in recent weeks over the publications of the cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed.
Recently Shakib has completed a year's ban for failing to report corrupt approaches, set off the social media storm in the Muslim-majority country after attending a ceremony in Kolkata dedicated to the Hindu goddess.
"I was on the stage for barely two minutes. People are talking about this and thought I inaugurated it," Shakib told an online forum late Monday.
"I did not do this and being a conscious Muslim I would not do this. But, maybe, I should not have gone there. I am sorry for this and apologize," he said.
"As a practicing Muslim, I always try to follow religious customs. Please forgive me if I have done anything wrong," he added.
An hour after a man made personal threats against him on a Facebook live forum, Shakib spoke accusing him of "hurting religious sentiment".Later the man apologised and went into hiding, but he was arrested in the north-eastern district of Sunamhanj on Tuesday.
Currently the International Cricket Council's top-ranked all-rounder in one-day international, Shakib was found in October 2918 to have breached the ICC anti-corruption code and was banned for two years, with one year suspended.
He in 2015 became the first cricketer to hold the ICC's top -rounder ranking in the game's three formats Tests, one-day internationals, and Twenty20 internationals.
