Trinamool Congress lawmaker Derek O'Brien in parliament today was sharply rebutted by Union Minister Smriti Irani as she appeared to defend a man associated to one of the controversial Twitter handles named for communal propaganda and rape threats. She urged Rajya Sabha chairman to delete that name from yesterday's documentation. She added “that individual is not a politician, not a celebrity...he's a common citizen who has the right to free speech but does not enjoy the privilege of this house."
The Textiles Minister asked to “expunge the name of an individual as you've done on many occasions.”
The subject of Twitter trolls was raised by Mr O'Brien on Thursday and said that some of them were invited to Prime Minister’s house for a “nice social digital party.”
He added that the Prime Minister of India handles Twenty six Twitter handles that give out rape threats and communal threats.Twitter has suspended two of these handles.
The opposition lawmaker added names of some of the handles that he claims had been suspended by Twitter - @Bhak_sala (used by Rahul Raj and Mahiviram.)
Smriti Irani drew a “Thank You” on Twitter without mentioning the name. To this, Rahul Raj tweeted:
