Saadat Hasan Manto is the name in the world of literature during the time of partition of India and Pakistan which no one can forget. Around 14 million people migrated and two million deaths as the new nation Pakistan was formed. The partition was bloody and brutal but for the journalist, screen writer and short story author from Bombay it appeared vexing worthless.
Saadat Hasan Manto was and even for few now, he is the most controversial writer. In his own words “If you cannot bear these stories then the society is unbearable. Who am I to remove the clothes of this society, which itself is naked. I don't even try to cover it, because it is not my job, that's the job of dressmakers.” Why would he not be a controversial writer? He was the only one at that time who confronted all the odds and wrote some stories about the atrocious truths reflecting the true face of the society. His writing were disturbing on many levels and shows people doing unlikely things in real life scenarios. Manto was not an anarchist or a sadist. He wrote what he witnessed from his eyes.
His faith in humanity and its value system was shattered first by the haunts of partition to which he and all the major writers of that period witnessed closely. Later on being asked to leave by the film studio where he was working only he was a Muslim, and that too by his friends, his belief in the idea of India was severely crashed and he chose to migrate to Pakistan. So the life taught him the lesson what schools could not. This is what we all see in his writings. Manto was someone who shone in the darkest hours of painful history.
Manto in his lifetime faced trial several times for immorality in his writings in both nations India and Pakistan for stories like Dhuan, Bu, Kali Salwar, Khol Do, Thanda Gosht and Upar Neeche Darmiyaan.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui as Sadat Hasan Manto
One of the most versatile artist of this decade with no doubt is Nawazuddin Siddiqui. He knows it very well how to create magic on screen, how to keep audience stay on their seats in-front of silver screen. It feels like yesterday when he did the brilliant performance as Faizal of Wasseypur and that epic dialogue “Sabka Badla Lega Re Tera Faizal” or the performance in Badlapur, Raman Raghav and list of films goes on. But now it might be that he is doing the most challenging role in his life by portraying himself as Saadat Hasan Manto and we cannot even imagine that what kind of magic he will create. We can only wait for it till the movie gets released. Movie is directed by Nandita Das and even before the release, the movie is already getting appreciation from the audience.
