Ram Naik, Governor of Uttar Pradesh has written to Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav is order to ask why rape-accused minister Gayatri Prajapati is still in his cabinet. Gayatri Prajapati has been accused of gang-raping a woman for two years. His passport has been revoked and a case has been registered against him following the orders of the Supreme Court.
A communique from the Governor's House expressed that the presence of Mr Prajapati is a serious threat on democratic sanctity, constitutional integrity and morality.
Last September, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav had sacked Gayatri Prajpati from the cabinet because of the accusation against him of owning far more assets than his known sources of income. According to sources, he was close with party patriarch Mulayam Singh and was reinstated within days.
The opposition BJP and BSP have been continuously blaming the Samajwadi Party for the free run Mr Prajapati is getting since the rape case was filed against him. According to the Samajwadi Party leaders, there are concerns that Mr Prajapati's arrest may play into the hands of the opposition amid the huge seven-phase assembly elections in the state.
According to sources, the family of the victim woman has shifted to Delhi saying they were being harassed by the Uttar Pradesh Police. She moved to Supreme Court after her complaints to the police were ignored. Her 16-year-old daughter alleged that she was attacked and attempts were made to rape her. She is admitted in the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences.
