Megalodon’s Teeth are as big as a human hand and this extinct species lived 2.6 million years ago.
Jessica Rose-Standafer Owens and her husband discovered a giant megalodon tooth.
New Delhi: South Carolina couple Jessica Rose-Standafer Owens and her husband Simon discovered an ancient Megalodon Shark Tooth which is as big as a human hand. The tooth is approximately 3 million years old and was found near the Stonoriver outside of Charleston.
Megalodon is considered to be the largest shark that ever existed and the largest fish ever recorded. The shark’s scientific name Carcharoclesmegalodon literally means “giant tooth,” as per IFL Science. This shark’s teeth are even 3 times larger than modern great white shark’s teeth.
Ms. Owens told NDTV, "On May 17th, my husband, Simon, and I decided to go look for some shark teeth up off the Stono River in Charleston."
She added, "My husband was up off the bank in the wooded area as I was looking up against the bank and saw a mass with gray striations sticking out of the sand."
She began recording the video of her discovery when she found out that mass in the sand was a giant shark tooth. She works as a clinical laboratory scientist. She said," I wanted to video the find as I was beyond excited to see something this large on the surface of the ground."
The video of their great discovery went viral on social media platforms (TikTok and Facebook) and garnered around 1.6 Million Views on TikTok and thousands of exciting comments. Ms. Owen was heard saying, "If it's a tooth, it's going to be like the biggest one we have ever found." Before brushing the sand away revealing that it was actually the giant tooth measuring 5.75 inches.
The Mace Brown Museum of Natural History at the College of Charleston said, "That's a great meg find - finds like that are why Charleston is known as the megalodon capital of the world!" as stated by Daily Mail.
The tooth was estimated to be 3 to 5 million years old and weighs around 5.9 ounces or 450 grams, according to the geology department of the college. Ms. Owens told NDTV, "A shark tooth that weighs close to a pound! Absolutely mind-blowing!"
She added that it was a 3 inches tooth which was the second-largest tooth they had ever found.
According to The Sun, Megalodons were the most feared ocean predators. Some megalodons could open their mouth as wide as 10 feet and could grow as big as 59 feet. The place where they found the tooth, South Carolina was seafloor once but now there are many ancient fossils being discovered there.
The couple has kept the Megalodon’s tooth in their house.
