The most controversial issue of the date is in regard to PM Narendra Modi whose photos will replace Mahatma Gandhi on the 2017 calendars of the government's khadi enterprise rages. BJP leader and Haryana Minister Anil Vij said the image of Mahatma Gandhi is responsible for devaluation of notes. He added, “Slowly Mahatma Gandhi will disappear from the notes.”
He said that PM Modi is a better brand than the father of nation, Mahatma Gandhi and hence it’s better to replace his image with that of PM Modi’s. He even claimed that the business of khadi has not been able to make progress ever since Mahatma Gandhi’s name has been associated with it and the sale of khadi products has gone up by 14 percent since Mr Modi Modi's photo on the khadi calendar.
This comment of Mr Anil Vij has been dismissed by Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar saying “It is his personal opinion and has nothing to do with the party."
Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala also showed his disapproval saying “Modi government is doing exactly what the British did.” He added that they are using the might of power of state and subjugating people and institutions.
The iconic image of Mahatma Gandhi in a loincloth, sitting cross-legged at a ‘charkha’ has long been used to promote khadi. In fact this is the first image that comes to every Indian on taking his name.
Government sources said, "Modi ji is a youth icon and the increasing popularity of Khadi products among youths is an example of this." This is what seems to justify replacement of Mahatma Gandhi’s image with PM Modi’s.
