Top Court Approves WhatsApp, Email, Fax Can Be Used For Summons, Notices
New Delhi: Supreme Court had announced that the court can send summons and notices via email, fax, or WhatsApp amid the coronavirus pandemic. Top Court said, "It has been brought to our notice that it was not possible to visit post offices for services of notices, summons, pleadings. Such service of all the above may be done through email, fax, and other instant messenger services like WhatsApp and other telephone messenger services."
"Two blue ticks would convey that the receiver has seen the notice," said the bench, comprising Justices A S Bopanna and R Subhash Reddy.
The decision of the Top Court came while the court was hearing on extending the limitation period of filing appeals in High Courts and tribunals due to the pandemic.
The Supreme Court, in May, had announced an e-filing facility allowing lawyers to file petitions beyond court hours.

Chief Justice SA Bobde stressed the need to adopt new technologies and said, "We have to accept the present situation and change our mindset. Eventually, it must settle down to a system of new and old. There are cases which must have to be heard in congregation."
He also said, In future, AI will be useful in deciding cases... if AI had been used, the Ayodhya case would have been decided without delay."
The judges of the Top Court conducting conference from indoors during coronavirus lockdown had resumed hearings in courtrooms in May. However, the respondents still join the court proceedings through video conference and the lawyers argue from their chambers.
The Chief Justice had asked the lawyers that at the time of the pandemic, they should avoid wearing their standard black coats and gowns and instead wear plain white shirts with a neckband.
