NEW DELHI: The Coronavirus scare is taking a toll of the auto sector is one of the firsts to take the hit. With over 260 cases being reported across the country so far, corporates are taking all essential and plausible measures to avoid the outburst. Tata Motors has decided to immediately scale down activities at its Pune plant and is getting to just the required skeleton operations by the end of Monday, March 23, 2020.
Maharashtra has been one of the worst impacted states in the country with maximum cases reported in Pune. Tata Motors plant is based on the outskirts of the city in Chakan, the company has determined to scale down extravagantly on production. The management further went on stating that it is ready for the plant closure by the end of Tuesday, March 24, 2020, if the situation worsens. The manufactory would likely be closed till March 31, 2020, and the management in the due course will examine the situation to begin further operations.
Ford, Ferrari and Toyota among others across the globe put a halt on production in an attempt to keep their employees indoors amidst the Coronavirus pandemic. The production curtail will also help automakers to keep a check on inventories as auto sales are projected to take a plunge due to the worldwide outbreak.
Coronavirus has spread further across the country, endangering more lives every day. "In the light of these developments and in line with broad global consensus, as a community, we need to act early and adopt social distancing to help break the contagion and get ahead of the virus," Tata Motors said.
