Supreme Court Enrage Over Center's Request For Telecom Firms: "Absolute Disrespect"New Delhi: The Supreme Court today stricken heavily on the government, which had asked for staggered payment of adjusted gross revenues(AGR) dues by telecom companies.
If a reassessment is permitted it is a fraud on this court. We won't spare officials who allowed reassessment of telecom dues," the Supreme Court said, ordering the Department of Telecom (DoT) to withdraw its move to allow reassessment.
The judges called it a question of "this court's prestige".
"Do companies feel they are more powerful on earth," the court questioned.
Earlier the government had approached the Supreme Court seeking approval for a formula allowing telecom service providers to make annual installments of unpaid or remaining AGR dues in the next 20 years or more.
"The Centre is conscious of the fact that any immediate adverse impact on the functioning of telecom service providers would not only have an adverse impact on the overall economy of the nation but would also seriously harm the interest of the consumers across the country," added the petition.
The fresh plea stated that telecom services providers who were liable to make payments have started making payments and the part payment is made arising out of dues.
