New Delhi: Today's the First Death Anniversary of Sushma Swaraj, former union minister and one of the BJP's tallest leaders. Born on 14th February 1952, Late. Smt. Sushma Swaraj was a Supreme Court lawyer and a Senior Leader of the Bhartiya Janata Party. After Indira Gandhi, Late Smt. Sushma Swaraj was the 2nd woman to hold the office. She served as the Minister of External Affairs of India in the 1st tenure of Narendra Modi Govt. (2014-2019). She was elected as the Member of Parliament 7 times and as a Member of the Legislative Assembly 3 times.
Political Career of Late Smt. Sushma Swaraj
Late Smt. Sushma Swaraj became the youngest Cabinet Minister of Haryana at the mere age of 25years in 1977. In the year 1996, she served as the Union Cabinet Minister for Information and Broadcasting during the 13 days government of the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Late Smt. Sushma Swaraj was the Cabinet Minister in the Department of Labour and Employment Haryana from 1977-1979. She also served as the Cabinet Minister in the Department of Education, Food & Civil Supplies at Haryana for 3 years from 1987-1990.
She was a Member of the Lok Sabha from 1996-1999. Late Smt. Sushma Swaraj also became the 1st female Chief Minister of Delhi in the year 1998, although she resigned from the post in the same year. She became the Union Cabinet Minister of Information & Broadcasting in 1996. In the year 1998, Late Smt. Sushma Swaraj was re-elected to 12th Lok Sabha for a 2nd term. She was also given supplementary charge of the Ministry of Telecommunications from 19th March-2nd October 1998.
She served as the Minister of External Affairs of India in the 1st tenure of Narendra Modi Govt. from 2014-2019. The US daily Wall Street Journal called Late Smt. Sushma Swaraj India’s “Best-loved Politician”. She won the Vidisha constituency in Madhya Pradesh for a 2nd term as she retained her seat by a margin of over 4lacs seats in the General Elections of 2014.
On the occasion of Rakshabandhan 2020, Indian Vice President Venkaiah Naidu took to Twitter and shared a picture of Late Smt. Sushma Swaraj tying a rakhi to him as he wrote, “Dear sister Sushma, missing you a lot today…”
