No Data Available On Migrants Deaths Amid Lockdown, Says Government
New Delhi: On Monday in the parliament, the Union labor ministry said that there is no data on the migrant deaths amid lockdown so the "question does not arise" of compensation, to a question on whether families of those who had lost their lives while trying to reach home in the coronavirus lockdown had been compensated.
On the first day of the monsoon parliament, the government's written response in Lok Sabha triggered anger and criticism from the opposition. The ministry has admitted that more than 1 crore migrants made their way back to their homes states from many corners of the country.
In the session, the ministry was asked whether the government has any data on the migrant workers who returned to their states.
Also, the ministry was asked whether the government was aware that a number of migrnat workers lost their lives during the return to the hometown and the details if any. Also, the government was asked about the economic assistance or compensation given to such families.
The Union labour minister Santosh Kumar Gnagwar in his written response said, "No such data is maintained. The question does not arise in view of the above".
"The Modi government does not know how many migrant labourers died and how many jobs were lost during the lockdown. If you haven't counted, have the deaths not taken place? It is sad that there has been no impact on the government. The world has seen their deaths. There is a Modi government which has no information," Congress leader Rahul Gandhi tweeted in Hindi this morning.
"Shocking that the labour ministry says it has no data on migrant deaths and hence no question of compensation," the Congress's Digvijaya Singh said.
Kerala Finance Minister Thomas Issac tweeted, "Centre doesn't care about deaths of migrant workers they caused by pushing them into trains, makeshift carts and on foot to the distant homes. At least acknowledge tentative and incomplete data of rail Sharmik Trains and road accidents."
Days after PM Modi announced the countrywide lockdown in March lakh of migrants workers desperate without jobs or shelter many were evicted from their homes started for their hometowns on foot or whatever vehicle they could manage.
