New National Education Policy Claimed To Reduce Curriculum Load Of Students: 10 Points
New Delhi: The government introduced a new framework for education which involved steps like, students till class 5th will be intructed/taught in the mother tongue or the local/regional language in all schools. The National Education Policy 2020 also extends the right to education for all children between three and 18 years of age. The goverment claims to bring two crore out-of-school children back into the mainstream with this new policy. PM Modi tweeted saying he "wholeheartedly welcomed" the policy, which he called a "long due and much awaited reform in the education sector".
Here's 10 points:
1. The education of children upto class 5th will be conducted in mother tongue or local or regional language in all schools up. The students will be taught Sanskrit at all levels and will get exposure foreign languages from the secondary school level. The policy also states that "no language will be imposed on any student".
2. Instead of following the 10+2 structure, the education will follow 5+3+3+4. The new policy comprises of 12 years of school and three of anganwadi or pre-school.
3. Further splitting it into a foundational stage (ages three and eight), three years of pre-primary (ages eight to 11), a preparatory stage (ages 11 to 14) and a secondary stage (ages 14 to 18). The centre claims that the new policy "bring hitherto uncovered age group of three to six years, recognised globally as crucial stage for development of mental faculties, under school curriculum".
4. Exam instead of being an annual practise, will now be only for three - at Classes 3, 5 and 8. The other years will be accessed on the basis of "regular and formative" style that is more "competency-based, promotes learning and development and tests higher-order skills, such as analysis, critical thinking and conceptual clarity".
5. Class 10 and 12 will go through board exam. However the pattern will be re-designed with "holistic development" as the aim. PARAKH (Performance Assessment, Review, and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development), will be the new standard of assessment.

6. The government said, the new policy will reduce the curriculum load of students and will have a more "multi-disciplinary" and "multi-lingual" approach. The centre also made a landmark announcement of removing the rigid distinction between arts and sciences, between curricular and extra-curricular activities and between vocational and academic stream.
7. The policy also aims for the premier higher education institutions like the IITs to have more "holistic education" approach by 2040. It added that the institute should also have a greater inclusion of arts and humanities subjects for students studying science subjects, and vice versa.
8. The graduate programme was proposed to be made for four years, with multiple exit options for students. A student who completes 4 year programme will recieve a multi-disciplinary. Students who complete the course for two years will get a diploma. The students who opt out after 12 months will be have studied a vocational/professional course. Master of Philosophy was reported to be discontinued.
9. In order to regulate higher education, a Higher Education Council of India (HECI) will be established. The HECI will focus on institutions that have 3,000 or more students.
10. National Higher Education Regulatory Council for regulation, General Education Council to set standards, Higher Education Grants Council for funding and National Accreditation Council for accreditation, will be the HECI's four independent verticals.
