Madhya Pradesh: Outrage After Dalit Coule Attempts Suicide Over Police Brutality
New Delhi: In Madhya Pradesh, Guna district the district collector and the Superintendent of Police were removed from their position late night on Wednesday after a Dalit couple attempted suicide by pesticide when the police removed them from the lad they had cultivated and destroyed their crops.
On social media the videos and photographs of the police assaulting the couple and their relatives and images of their children sobbing as the parents fell unconscious went viral, resulting outrage.
The couple in the video drank pesticides in an attempt to suicide on Tuesday after being forced to watch their crops being destroyed by the revenue department officials because the land, owned by the government was being taken over for a college.
In the disturbing video, the couple is being dragged and beaten by a large number of policemen on the field. Whereas their children are witness to the assault and try to cling to their parents but are brutally pushed by the police.
Whereas Ram Kumar Ahirwar(38) and Savitri Devi(35) are reportedly stable in the government-run hospitals.
Former Madhya Pradesh CM and Senior Congress leader Kamal Nath condemned the incident in a series of tweets and said,“ Where is this Shivraj Singh government taking us? What kind of Jungle Raj is this? Look at the way a Dalit farmer couple has been attacked inhumanly by the policemen. If there was a dispute regarding government land, it could have been solved through legal means. But what kind of justice is it to take the law into hands and thrash him, his wife, his relatives, and his innocent kinds? Will the Shivraj government show the same alacrity over the thousands of acres of land grabbed by so-called people’s servants and prominent people? Such incidents can never be tolerated. The culprits should be punished strictly or else the Congress won’t keep silent.”

As per the reports, the Ahiwar couple had borrowed Rs 2 lakh to cultivate the leased land which, claimed the government official, which was marked for construction of a college.
We've probed the entire episode and checked the footage. Our team had to act only after the couple consumed pesticide and had to be rushed to the hospital," S Vishwanath, Guna District
Collector, said, adding, "Had the team not acted, the couple could have died and more cases could have taken place".
"We don't know whose land it is. We've been farming on it for a long time. When our standing crop has been destroyed, we don't have any option but to kill ourselves," Savitri Devi said.
