New Delhi: The central government's proposal to use colour-coded stickers in the national capital for classifying vehicles on the basis of fuel used has been approved by the Top Court. It is based on a model used in Paris, the two types of stickers will be used to distinguish between vehicles that run on petrol, CNG and diesel. Petrol and CNG- run vehicles will have light blue stickers, while the diesel vehicles will have orange stickers.
This step is taken to help restrict the use of vehicles on days of severe pollution levels. The scheme has been supported by the centre, who said that it will be a more scientific way than the odd-even scheme.
A bench headed by Justice MB Lokur, was told by the transport ministry that the petrol and CNG run vehicles will have a hologram-based sticker of light-blue colour will be used for while diesel vehicles will have similar sticker of orange colour.
S Abdul Nazeer and Deepak Gupta, who were also thepart of the bench asked the ministry to implement the use of coloured stickers by September 30,on the vehicles operating in Delhi-NCR.
Additional Solicitor General ANS Nadkarni, who was representing the ministry, has been asked by the Top Court, to consider having green number plates for electric and hybrid vehicles. The Additional Solicitor General told the court that the ministry would look into it and take a decision soon.
Advocate Aparajita Singh, who was assisting the court as amicus curiae in the matter of air pollution, had earlier suggested to the bench to use the colour-coded stickers,to identify the nature of fuel being used in vehicles.
