COVID-19: Aviation Minister Asks "Why Quarantine Flyers ‘With Green Status’ On Aarogya App"
NEW DELHI: : International flight operations may start by mid-June or end-July if the COVID-19 virus "behaves in a predictable manner", Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said Saturday afternoon, during an online discussion with the public to clarify norms governing "calibrated" restart of domestic flights from Monday.
He also said that he don't understand the need for quarantining air passengers displaying green status on the government's Aarogya Setu app.
"Why wait till August or September? If situation eases or improves, if virus behaves in predictable manner and we get used to co-exist(ing) with it, we're in position to make arrangements. Why not start by June middle or end July?" Mr Puri said today.
The statement came when the aviation minister was addressing an online discussion with the public to clarify the directives issued in view of the 'calibrated' resumption of the domestic flights from Monday, May 25.
"Don't understand the need for quarantine of passenger who has green status on Aarogya Setu app," said Mr. Hardeep Singh Puri in his virtual address and also opened up about centre's plan to soon restart the international airlines which remain banned for now, before August.
"I am fully hopeful that before August or September, we will try to start a good percentage of international civil aviation operations, if not complete international operations... depending on what is the situation," he added.
His statement comes after a couple of states have issued advisory for passengers coming into their states through airways to abide the mandatory institutional quarantine of 7-14 days.
"Arogya Setu app is something I would suggest to everyone as it is an excellent contact-tracing app. There is nothing comparable to this app," Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said during a Facebook live address today.
Previously too, the aviation ministry has pointed out a similar point during a press briefing on his Thursday in which he announced various SOPs and guidelines related to revised flight operations, including web check-ins air fares and the seven categories of routes.
He said on Thursday, "The quarantine issue will be dealt with in a pragmatic manner. For instance, if I go to Kerala, then I will have to be in quarantine for 14 days. When I come back, will I be sent to quarantine again for 14 days? This is not practical."
He had then said that to deal with quarantining of air passengers, one needs to follow a 'pragmatic' way for this.
Clearing out all the 'fuss' today, he further said, I don't know why we are making such a fuss on the quarantine issue. Bhai, this is domestic travel. Same laws will apply here that applies when you travel by train or a bus... People who are positive will not be allowed to board the flights."
