Coronavirus: Over 200 Beached Sikhs Evicted From Delhi Gurudwara
New Delhi: From a Gurudwara, in north Delhi's Majnu ka Tilla around 200 people were evacuated today. The people had come there over the weekend to take the interstate buses to Punjab but got stranded when they found the buses were not running and had to take shelter in the gurdwara.
According to the chief of the Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee, Manjinder Singh Sirsa has said 205 people had been staying at the gurudwara since lockdown. They were shifted today to the government school at Nehru Vihar, which has been one of the designated shelters for the needy.
The people would be placed under the mandatory 14-day quarantine and undergo coronavirus tests, Mr. Sirsa said.
Delhi's Lieutenant-Governor Anil Baijal had said anyone violating lockdown would be sent to the government shelters with the message of social distancing is being repeatedly underscored by the government and the medical fraternity as the key method to battle the rapidly spreading coronavirus.
The Punjab government has asked the people not to congregate in large numbers for the coming festival of Baisakhi. The harvest festival is one of the biggest festivals of north India and especially Punjab.
The number of coronavirus cases across the country increased by 146 over the last 24 hours, bringing up the total number of cases a shade short of 1,400.
