Tamil-Speaking Ministers Join Firefight As Anti-Hindi Uproar Flares
Hindi will not be thrust upon any state, the government said on Sunday, stepping up its damage control amid a controversy over the draft version of the National Education Policy 2019, which is seen by many in the southern states as an attempt to impose Hindi on school students.
New Delhi: On Thursday, an incident took place in Upper Assam's Tinsukia district, which claimed the life of at least five people. The people were suspected to be killed by suspected United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) terrorists.
As per the reports, the terrorists belonging to ULFA's Paresh Baruah faction aka ULFA-I, fired indiscriminately at a group of people belonging to the Bengali community while they were playing a game near the Dhola-Sadiya bridge around 7:45 pm.
The deceased have been identified as Shyamlal Biswas, Ananta Biswas, Abhinash Biswas, Subal Biswas and Dhananjay Namsudra. The Trinamool Congress will take out rallies in different parts of the state to protest the killings, said Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh also condemned the incident
Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal asked State Ministers Keshav Mahanta and Topon Kumar Gogoi to rush to the incident site and take stock of the situation, immediately after the incident. An official statement said that, Assam DGP Kula Saikia and Additional Director General of Police Mukesh Agarwalla were also sent to the spot.
