Former Coal Secretary, 2 Bureaucrats Convicted By CBI Court For Coal Scam

Today, among the three former bureaucrats former Coal Secretary HC Gupta convicted of corruption in a coal scam case by a special CBI Court.




The allocation of a coal mining block in Madhya Pradesh is the case related to a private company. It is the first case in which the government officials have held guilty in any of the coal scam case. HC Gupta, KS Kropha, KC Samria have all been convicted under sections of prevention of corruption act and conspiracy.






In the Congress led UPA government HC Gupta was a Coal Secretary, between 2006 and 2008. As chairman of the screening committee that looked into allocation of coal blocks, HC Gupta was accused of not following a transparent auctioning system and consequently causing losses running into crores to the state exchequer. He was booked in as many as eight cases.






To the court HC Gupta has requested for a joint trial of the cases against him, citing his advancing age and precarious finances. But his petition was rejected as the court said the cases were at different stages.




He made headlines when he told to the CBI court last year that he would rather be facing the trial from inside jail than be out on the bail since he could no longer be affording his legal defence.  He said that his "inner voice" had told him "god wants me to be in jail."
