New Delhi: Akshay Kumar's Saugandh co-star ShanthiPriya recently revealed in an interview that she was mistreated by the industry for her skin colour. She shared how she faced rejection in the '90s due to her skin tone. The former Bollywood actress revealed how she and her sister BhanuPriya had to quit the film industry as they did not accept both the sisters because of their skin colour.
In an interview with NBT.com, she revealed, "Today, I am proud of myself but earlier I used to be humiliated in front of the entire crew. I was told that my makeup would not match with the hero and both of us looked different. Then the entire process would be redone. It was very embarrassing. Every day before going to shoot I would get scared as to how people would react to seeing me. There also came a time when I used to spend more time hiding my skin color rather than improvising on the script or other things."
Further in the interview she also shared that Akshay Kumar once made fun of her skin tone on the sets of Ikke Pe Ikka, " My role in the film Ikke Pe Ikka was of a modern girl and the script demanded that I had to wear a short dress. I used to wear skin-coloured stockings and once while shooting, Akshay joked about my knees looking darker than usual. He repeatedly said that there were blood clots in my knees and all the actors and other members of the crew had a good laugh," she said.

Later in the interview, she clarified that she is not disgracing Akshay Kumar in any particular way but just sharing that how mocking someone can have a greater impact on their mind that can make them feel inferior about themselves. "Akshay is my good friend and I am not complaining here, but I definitely want to tell you that people have to understand how a joke made about someone's colour can hurt him/her,” she said.
ShanthiPriya also revealed that she had to quit two films as she refused to wear swimsuit and was also told the character demanded a fair skin heroine. Her sister also faced the same problem and was talk of the town in many magazines during those days and eventually, just like her sister, she had to quit the film industry because of her dusky skin tone.
ShanthiPriya made her debut in the film Saugandh alongside Akshay Kumar. Shanthipriya also has starred in several Hindi, Telugu and Tamil films. Phool Aur Angaar, Veerta, Meherbaan, Ikke Pe Ikka were some of Shanthipriya's Hindi films. The actor is said to be seen in the upcoming season of Bigg Boss.
