New UK Strain Infections For COVID19 In India Reaches 90, Says Health Ministry

New Delhi: Total Ninety people in India have infected from the new strain of coronavirus, which was first detected in the United Kingdom in September, the Health Ministry said this today. Eight of cases of this strain are claimed to be deadly infectious.

Across the country, 18,222 fresh Covid cases in the last 24 hours took the number to 1,04,31,639; 228 deaths took the total number of deaths linked to the disease to 1,50,798. 

The rise in the number of patients with the new strain waits for a vaccine implementation after Bharat Biotech's Covaxin and Pune-based Serum Institute of India's Covishield were approved for emergency use last Sunday. The centre carried out the third vaccine dry run across the country yesterday.

"India is demonstrating increase in the number of COVID-19 tests, the government further stressed. It has crossed the landmark of 18 crore total tests today," the Health Ministry noted in the statement. 

"Progressive countrywide expansion in testing infrastructure has played a crucial role in the steep rise of testing numbers. With 2316 testing labs in the country including 1201 Government laboratories and 1115 Private laboratories, the daily testing capacity has got a substantial boost," the statement read.

The number of such SARS-Cov-2 cases of the new UK virus stood at 82 till Friday.

The Central Government has reduced the number of flights to the UK from 60 per week to 30 to curtail the faster-spreading mutant strain in the country.
