New Delhi: On Friday the human clinical trial of the COVID-19 vaccine candidate Covaxin, kicked off at the AIIMS.
A 30-year-old man was given the first shot for the vaccine of the Covaxin, India's first COVID-19 vaccine.
A total of 12 volunteers were called for the number of pre-tests that include blood and nasopharyngeal testing for coronavirus.
10 healthy individuals were selected for the vaccine to be given in the phases after the results.
After the first dose, the report on their health condition will be submitted to the ethics committee, which will be reviewing the entire process.
Covaxin being developed by the Hyderabad based Bharat Biotech in the collaboration with the ICMR and the National Institute of Virology recently got the nod for the human clinical trials to form the Drugs Controller General of India.
AIIMS Delhi is among the 12 sites selected by the ICMR for phase 1 and 2 randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled clinical trials of Covaxin.
The vaccine would be tested on 375 volunteers in phase 1 and 100 of them, the highest would be from AIIMS.In the second phase, it would include around 750 volunteers from all 12 sites.
The phase of the trail will be done on the healthy people age between 18 and 55 years, having no co-morbid conditions. Whereas in the first phase of trail women with no pregnancy will be selected.
In the second phase, 750 people will be recruited between the ages of 12 and 65, PTI quote AIIMS Director Dr. Randeep Guleria as saying.
Already, around 1,800 volunteers have registered themselves for the trial at AIIMS, he had said.
