Coronavirus Updates: With 18,653 New Cases In 24 Hours, Recoveries In India Rise To 3.47 Lakh
New Delhi: From Today as India entered "Unlock-2" with more relaxation in the lockdown curbs, the country in the past 24 hours has reported 18,653 new cases, taking the total number of cases to 5,85493.
After 507 new fatalities, the death toll rose to 17,400 today. It was the eight-day in a row that over 15,000 cases have been reported daily in the country.
As per the data of the health ministry, the number of active cases stands at 2,20,114 while 3,47,978 people have recovered. While the gap between the recovered and the active patients has widened to 1.27 lakh the recovery rate has improved to 59.43%.
As per the ICMR, a total of 88,26,585 samples have been tested up to June 30 for coronavirus, with 2,17,931 samples been tested on Tuesday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address to the nation on Tuesday said people not strictly adhering to precautions as they did during the lockdown was a cause of worry.
"We notice (increasing) negligence in people's social and personal behavior. We used to meticulously wash hands, used sanitizers, wore masks, maintained social distancing, and avoided shaking hands... we see this is not happening as strictly anymore. That is a sign of worry," Prime Minister Modi said.
"This is a serious matter. We must maintain discipline. People not following the rules need to be stopped and made aware. Nobody is above the rule in India, even if it is the leader of the nation," PM Modi said.
Spelling some relief after four days, Maharashtra's new coronavirus cases dropped below the 5K mark to 4,878 on Tuesday, but the death toll jumped to its third-highest in a fortnight, while the number of patients in Pune division crossed the 25K mark, health officials said.
The number of fatalities in the state shot up from the June-lowest of 62 to 245 on Tuesday, down from the previous highest daily death toll of 248 notched on June 23.
However, on June 16, the state had reported the highest 1,409 fatalities, taking into account the reconciliation of earlier deaths, which drastically escalated the toll.
Globally, the total number of coronavirus cases has increased to 1.04 crore with 5.1 lakh fatalities, according to Johns Hopkins University.
