New Delhi: In Andhra Pradesh's Prakasam district at least nine people have died after consuming alcohol-based hand sanitizer in the last two days, reported Hindustan Times on Friday.
The incident took place in Kuricehdu town and the police are investigating if the deceased mixed it wit the spurious liquor or consumed it raw.
In the local temple, a beggar complained of severe burning sensation in his stomach and died while being taken to the hospital on Wednesday night.
Whereas two others who were shifted to the government hospital in Darsi town, succumbed on Thursday night. Meanwhile, six people who were also admitted to the hospital with stomach pain died on Friday morning.
Hours after the victim fell unconscious after consuming the hand sanitizer, as per the family member. Whereas the quantity of consumption is still not clear.
Siddhart Kaushal, Prakasam district Superintendent of Police told the newspaper that they consumed hand sanitizer due to the non-availablity of liquor amid the coronavirus pandemic.
To stop the spread of coronavirus all the licensed liquor shops have been closed in Kurichedu. Kaushal added that sanitizers from all local shops have been taken for lab tests.
