Mahant Yogi Adityanath, born as Ajay singh Bisht is an Indian Priest-politician with a strong Hindutva image and now to be the Cheif Minister of UP and a star campaigner for BJP. He has been a member of Parliament from Gorakhpur Constituency UP for continuous five terms since 1998. He is also a Mahant or head of Priest of the Gorakhpur mutt and founder of the Hindu Yuva Vahini, it is a youth based organization that is involved in communal violence.

1- In 2005, Adityanath organized a 'Purification drive' whose motive was to convert the Christians into Hindus. In this drive around 1,800 Christians were converted to Hinduism in the city of Etah located in UP.
2- In 2005, he also Claimed that, "I will not stop till I turn UP and India into a Hindu Rashtra (Hindu state)".
3- In January 2007, a change arises in between a Hindu group and Muslim during a Muharram procession in Gorakhpur which led to the Hospitalisation of a young Hindu, Raj Kumar Agrahari. The District Magistrate announced it clearly that Adityanath should not visit the site as it may increase the conflicts. Yogi Adityanath initially agreed to the Magistrate but after Agrahari died, he disobeyed the magistrate and travelled to the site with group of his followers. Adityanath started a non-violent dharna on the site supported by his followers. Many speeches were made and some of his followers set fire to a nearby mazar (Muslim mausoleum)
4- He was jailed subsequently after the Dharna(Protest) where a curfew was implemented by the local police, but Adityanath broke it. He was arrested and remanded for a fortnight, on charges of disturbing peace in the city.
5-His arrest resulted further disturbances in nation and several coaches of the Mumbai-Gorakhpur Godan Express were burnt.
6- This all soon escalated to riots across Gorakhpur leading to the burning of mosques, homes, buses and trains.After his release, Adityanath protested his jailing in the Parliament.
