Valentine's Day: Love is in the air!

New Delhi : So here's the day exclusively dedicated to love, the Valentine's Day. There has to be something truly magical about this day, otherwise, how does suddenly everything around us seem so beautiful and romantic?

As you must read several times, Valentine Day's origin takes us back to a time in Rome when soldiers were forbidden to marry. Then lived a Saint Valentinus who dared to marry off these soldiers. He was imprisoned for performing such weddings and for ministering to Christians persecuted under the Roman Empire. It is believed that during his imprisonment, the Saint restored sight to the blind daughter of his judge, and before his execution he wrote her a letter signed "Your Valentine" as a farewell. And since February 14 is the birthday of the Saint, it's observed as Saint Valentine's Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine.

Apart from this, there are several other martyrdom stories associated with this day connected to February 14.

Valentine's Day is recognized as a significant cultural, religious, and commercial celebration of romance in many regions around the world, although it is not a public holiday in any country.

In India, the day has evolved as a "modern culture" and a commercial celebration of love. There is a huge excitement, especially among the youth regarding this day which has raised the prospects of gift manufacturing companies.

Bollywood can also be called as an inculcator when it comes to the expression of love in India because here, movies have a huge impact on the masses and youth look upto the films as a reference for "true love". In fact, even within B-town, there are grand celebrations around this day. For instance, actor - director - producer Karan Johar throws an exclusive Valentine's Day bash.

Talking about the real masses, their Valentine's day's experiences are no less than a film script. With romantic movie songs (gifted by Bollywood, gifts, chocolates & flowers by various brands) and several food outlets (that release special offers during this week), things are nearly perfect for any couple who wish to celebrate the day. Social media has also empowered the lovers helping them to reach each other virtually in real time. But with moral policing done by several self proclaimed "defenders and restorers of morality and culture", there is action and drama too.

Anxious about what's your day going to be like? Happy Valentine's day!
