Justice Gogoi Recommended By CJI Dipak Misra As His Successor

New Delhi: Today, the Chief Justice of India Dipak Mishra, wrote to the government and recommended Justice Ranjan Gogoi as his successor. CJI Dipak Mishra will be retiring on the second of October. The second senior-most judge in the Supreme Court, Justice Gogoi, will take charge on October 3 as the next Chief Justice of India.

It is a common tradition in which the Law Ministry asks the Chief Justice to recommend his successor. A few days ago, the Law Ministry had, asked the Chief Justice to recommend his successor.

Till next year November 17th, Justice Gogoi will serve as the Chief Justice of India. He will be administered the oath of office by President Ram Nath Kovind.

In January, Justice Gogoi was among the four judges who criticised Chief Justice Misra in a rare press conference. Justice Misra was accused of misusing his role of assigning cases as the Supreme Court's Master of the Roster. Justice Gogoi is currently hearing the Assam NRC issue.

In 2012, Justice Gogoi was elevated to the Supreme Court and is known to be a soft-spoken but tough judge.

Justice Gogoi was born in 1954 and joined the Bar in 1978. On February 28, 2001, he was appointed as the Permanent Judge of Gauhati High Court. In September 2010, he was transferred to the Punjab and Haryana High Court and went on to become the Chief Justice in February 2011.
