New  Delhi: Modern Indian history cannot be defined without mentioning the name of APJ Abdul Kalam. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam (15 October 1931 – 27 July 2015) was a renowned Indian scientist who became 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007. The missile man of India was a tremendous scientist, teacher, statesman and most importantly a great human being. On July 27, 2015, Dr Kalam collapsed and died due to cardiac arrest while delivering a lecture at the IIM Shillong.

In 1981 the Government of India honoured him with the Padma Bhushan. In 1990, Dr Kalam was awarded the Padma Vibhushan for his work with ISRO and DRDO. For his contribution to scientific research and modernisation of defence technology in India, he was honoured with India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna in 1997.  The DRDO built Abdul Kalam National Memorial, in his memory at Pei Karumbu,Tamil Nadu. The memorial was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in July 2017.
